Heartland Announces MOU with US Department of Agricultures' National Resources Conservation Service

Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), formerly known as the Soil Conservation Service (SCS), is an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that provides technical assistance to farmers and other private landowners and managers. The organization provides U.S. farmers and ranchers with financial and technical assistance to voluntarily put conservation on the ground - helping both the environment, and agricultural operations.

The Heartland/NRCS Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishes the framework for a relationship in support of the development, testing, use, deployment, and maintenance of NRCS conservation models/tools. Heartland plans to integrate these models/tools with the PCM Farmer Portal – which will result in significant improvements to the Farmer Portal’s sustainability metrics.

Heartland's Cyber Secure Dashboard Featured in Cybersecurity for Manufacturing Workshop

The Critical Infrastructure Resilience Institute (CIRI) and the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Defense (DoD) will host a workshop focused on cybersecurity in the manufacturing sector. At this event, the manufacturing and cybersecurity communities will intersect to explore threats faced by manufacturing companies of all sizes and discover efforts underway to measurably improve the cybersecurity practices of manufacturers.

The intent of this workshop is to promote industry-wide adoption of the NIST CSF Manufacturing Profile, increase cybersecurity awareness, focus on workforce development, and develop low-cost, easy-to-use solutions geared toward small manufacturers. The workshop will feature panel discussions and interactive breakout sessions aimed at collaboratively improving the security and resilience of manufacturing supply chains nationwide.​

New Manufacturing Profile View in Cyber Secure Dashboard Tool

Just after rolling out Heartland’s first major Cyber Secure Dashboard update, the company announced today the latest upgrade to the Dashboard tool – the new NIST Manufacturing Profile View.

Funded by the Department of Homeland Security’s Critical Infrastructure Resilience Institute, the new Cyber Secure Dashboard Manufacturing Profile View gives manufacturers the ability to view their cybersecurity posture through the lens of the new National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Manufacturing Profile.

The Manufacturing Profile is an implementation of NIST's Cybersecurity Framework that was developed specifically for the manufacturing sector as a roadmap to reduce the cybersecurity risk of manufacturers.  The profile is aligned with the manufacturing sector's goals and best practices, and provides manufacturers with the following:

  • An easy-to-follow process to improve their cybersecurity posture
  • A mechanism to assess and manage their cybersecurity risks
  • In-tool access to policy templates and best practices
  • A system to communicate cybersecurity policies and assessments with internal and external stakeholder

The NIST Manufacturing Profile is part of the updated and evolving NIST framework – a federally backed effort aimed at further extending NIST’s voluntary guidance to organizations on reducing cybersecurity risks. Recognizing that cybersecurity risks and recommendations will be unique for every major industry, NIST is in the process of developing and rolling out customized “Profiles” for other major industries as well.

The new Cyber Secure Dashboard Manufacturing Profile update includes the following:

  1. A new, intuitive display that links business objectives to individual security controls
  2. User adjustable risk level
  3. Security controls organized according to NIST standards
  4. Full compatibility with 800-171 and NIST CSF dashboards

Initial development of the Cyber Secure Dashboard was prompted by a recent Department of Defense cybersecurity regulations that requires all manufacturers working with controlled unclassified information to satisfy the NIST SP 800-171 r1 – a daunting task for small and mid-sized businesses. Organized according to the nationally accepted “Cybersecurity Framework,” the Dashboard cross references the DoD mandated control requirements of the NIST SP 800-171 r1 with the cybersecurity control standard, and the NIST SP 800-53r4, and provides industry standard best-practices and policy templates to greatly simplify the complex compliance process. The Dashboard greatly simplifies the process of managing compliance with these complex federal requirements. It helps manufacturers understand, achieve, and maintain compliance – with a forward-leaning approach toward satisfying the continuing evolution.

Heartland Announces the First Major Update to the Cyber Security Dashboard Tool

Heartland Science and Technology Group has released the latest updates to the Cyber Secure Dashboard - a cyber security management tool created for businesses in the DoD supply chain needing to comply with complex new federally mandated cybersecurity guidelines.

The Dashboard update includes:

  1. An improved user interface with upgraded navigation and layout - making the relationships between controls and the myriad referenced federal requirement/guideline documents much more clear and easy to understand;
  2. A new snapshot view that give the user a quick, graphical representation of their compliance status;
  3. A free demo account populated with sample data which allows users to explore baseline functionality and quickly understand how the tool facilitates step-by-step progress, organizational access, documentation of assets, and how a deep, encyclopedic collection of reference documentation can streamline compliance – clarifying the process for both seasoned experts as well as the uninitiated.

The Cyber Secure Dashboard continues to be developed by Heartland Science & Technology Group in collaboration with the University of Illinois, the Department of Homeland Security’s Critical Infrastructure Resilience Institute, and the Digital Manufacturing & Design Innovation Institute.

Heartland to Support Critical Infrastructure Resilience Institute's Maritime Port Security Project

Heartland has been awarded a contract to support the “Assessment & Measurement of Port Disruptions Project,” lead by Research Scientist Gabriel Weaver and funded by the Critical Infrastructure Resilience Institute (CIRI) – a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence. Weaver’s team of CIRI researchers at the University of Illinois are leading an effort to help owners and operators at U.S. ports and the U.S. Coast Guard to strengthen the physical and cybersecurity of American ports against natural and man-caused disruptions.

Heartland’s role in the project will be to collaborate on the development of a comprehensive framework and a corresponding set of modeling and assessment tools. Ultimately, these tools will enable port authorities to conduct contextually relevant threat-based assessments of complex, unique port infrastructures – revealing the cyber-physical dependencies within ports and allowing authorities to better understand, prepare for, and manage potential disruptions.

Due to the increasing automation of U.S. maritime ports, cybersecurity has become every bit as important as physical security. Modern shipping ports require computer systems in order to accommodate an increasing number of port calls, larger vessel sizes, and tighter supply chains. Therefore, disruptions to assets on these networks have the potential to propagate to other critical infrastructures at great economic cost. Such ddisruptions may be introduced accidentally (e.g. by misconfiguration), or intentionally by adversaries that include nation states, organized crime, pirates, hacktivists, and trusted insiders.

Heartland Shows Cyber Secure Dashboard at NDTA-USTRANSCOM 2017 Fall Meeting

Heartland Science & Technology Group attended the NDTA-USTRANSCOM 2017 Fall Meeting in St. Louis to introduce the Cyber Secure Dashboard to USTRANSCOM and its transportation contractors. The event marks the first introduction of the Dashboard tool to the transportation industry.

The Dashboard tool is a collaborative effort between Heartland, the University of Illinois and the Critical Infrastructure Resilience Institute (CIRI) - a US Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence. Through a recent collaborative research agreement (CRADA) established between CIRI and USTRANSCOM, the Dashboard will be tested within the USTRANSCOM enterprise – providing important, real-world, industry-specific feedback to Heartland as we continue to enhance Dashboard tool capabilities.

Heartland Partner Explores Collaborations with USTRANSCOM

The Critical Infrastructure Resilience Institute (CIRI) has recently negotiated a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with USTRANSCOM that will allow the two organizations to test and validate research findings and capabilities developed at CIRI within USTRANSCOM’s real-world, global supply chain processes. 

The agreement will bring new insights to the development of the Cyber Secure Dashboard tool - an ongoing collaborative effort between Heartland Science & Technology Group, CIRI, and the University of Illinois. The tool is relevant to USTRANSCOM's contractors who are facing new federal requirements to meet cybersecurity standards. 

USTRANSCOM will benefit from identifying tools and capabilities that can improve the command’s mission assurance posture by strengthening the security and resilience of its mission-critical supply chain. USTRANSCOM represents an ideal real-world test bed for CIRI-developed capabilities, tools, and technologies – particularly those related to cybersecurity.

Precision Conservation Management Funded

When making decisions about conservation practices, farmers must weigh financial risks, consider labor availability and cost, and manage time commitments. But the University of Illinois, the Illinois Corn Growers Association, and 30 other partners with agricultural interests have developed a new farmer service program – Precision Conservation Management (PCM) – to help farmers make those decisions.
